It's Evolution, Baby

Here it is....

Ok, it's really not that exciting, but roll with it. I have no idea if the name will stay the same or change. I have no idea if I'll be able to keep up with this after my vacation is over (noooooo). But it's here, I have pictures, and I'm doin' it.

Also...this is kind of fun...

I haven't figured out how to get my sunflowers transfered over (I feel like they're pretty important), but I'll get there.

It's been real, Poorboys + Pilgrims!! I need to figure out how to make this thing into a book. Another project, perhaps...?

The Wheels Are Turning

The winds of change, the wheels on the bus, the days of our lives: CHANGE. It's a-coming.

And I think it may be in the form of a new blog. I don't know. It could be the vacation crazies talking (vacrazies?!). But something's gotta give over here and I basically refuse to pay a measly $2.50/month to this site. Eff. THAT. That's like, a scone from Albermarle Baking Company. I feel it's an easy choice.

So stay tuned, people. Or run away. Either way... it's coming.

**side note: I JUST went to add a witty/cool/awesome/ironic/stupid picture to the bottom of this and realized I COULDN'T. Oh it's on.

Sad Story/Life Dilemma

Apparently I have reached capacity over here on Poboys and Pilgrims for sharing photos...noooooooo!!! I had a million beautiful new ones to upload today and now this!! I'm distressed. Do I start a new blog? Give up completely? Do some sweet Google research to see how to (maybe) delete older, more stupid pics? Pay the $2.50/month to add more space? Wait for Caroline to figure this out for me so I can move forward with life??

Stress. Dangit. I'm working on it. Well, not really, but an answer may present itself in the meantime.

Meanwhile, head over here for random photo overload.

Otherwise, stay tuned...

Gettin' Mine

It was one of those weekends where I did a whole lotta nothing and it felt great. I had no plans, no direction, no intention of doing anything. November is stacking up to be super busy every weekend (and I'm pumped!) so it was nice to lounge around, waiting for Sandy.

I had a coupon for a free latte at Hotcakes! Took my clogs for a walk and sipped on the goodness (...also slurped 2% milk and am pretty pumped to kick the skim).

Went for a 7-mile run (by myself?? What the whaaat?!) around UVA and napped in the leaves for a solid hour before taking it inside.

Caught up with a new book (and my "Perfect Boyfriend" in the background).

On Sunday, we rode to Crozet for coffee and convo. 30 miles later, stocked my kitchen with loads of PBR, hummus, chips, salsa, grapefruit juice, seltzer, bread, CheezeIts, peanut butter, and other hurricane essentials.

Had a backyard brew to kick it off right.

Pabst is clearly on everyone's mind these days...

Don't worry--the depression is temporary, lest I slice

The wind's starting to pick up, but so far we've still got power!! Hoping Sandy blows by us all (even though she is a great excuse to feast and booze for days on end...).

Good Monday, indeed!

Love Where You Live

I'll be the first to tell you that I. Love. Charlottesville. I am surrounded by some of the most beautiful mountains, have quick access to the ocean, get to interact with the smartest people in the country (trust me--they'll tell you), and can take a hop-skip-jump and be immersed in something historic.

This weekend was no exception, and it started on Friday. Sometime earlier this week I go the brilliant idea to ask my boss if I could take a tour/spend the day at Monticello (because I honestly haven't been there since SECOND grade and what if one of my groups wants to visit?! I need to know how to sell the product!!). Being the laid-back boss that she is, she said, "Yes of course!!" Even better--earlier this year I won two Behind-the-Scenes passes to see the upstairs of the house, so naturally I invited my wonderful mama to tag along and snoop inside Mr. Jefferson's abode.

Friday was the perfect day to visit because a giant rain storm the night before left us this awesome spooky fog:

However, once we got through the tour, we were given beautiful sunshine and perfect fall foliage.

She's sooo pretty!
Ole TJ knew what he was doin.

Yesterday, I went to an adorbs baby shower for little Quinn N. She is sure to be the most fashionable baby on the block and I'm pretty pumped to see her rock her infant legwarmers. After the shower, I got a wild hair and decided I HAD TO SEE COPPER ASAP + we had a free pizza coupon that was expiring this weekend (waste not want not!) so I drove up to the VP and we gorged and drank like the good ole days.
OMG SO EXCITED!!
It's rough around these parts.
Some things never change...
And what better way to follow up a night of pure, unadulterated laziness? A trip to the Vineyard!

I've missed these two so...

Anything the light touches, Queen Caroline...

Obviously, another wonderful weekend under the belt. The only thing more exciting is that today is Granny's 92nd bday! All those years + a knee AND hip replacement and still lookin' fly. I'll take those genes.

Cheers to the Weekend,
Hannah

How to Start Your Day

This morning, I woke up to a pile of cat yack filled with cricket carcasses! What a wonderful start to the week. Poor little party cat seems to have overdosed on HBCs...I can't say I'm not thrilled by her inner-killah spirit, but I think someone's learned her limits...

Meanwhile, I have spinach everywhere!!!
(yes, this post has guaranteed my spot to early granny-hood. Cat + garden = 80-year old trapped in my body. Can't stop won't stop.)

On Saturday, I went to a local wine festival with my love Sara! Met another Sarah and had fun running into people of the past and tasting all the (mostly) delicious wine from around town. Note: Horton's fruit wine is a no-go. Blech.

And finally, the countdown is on. It's been almost two months since I've seen this fool and almost one year since our lives ended completely. SW 2011!!!! Who could forget?!? But not to dwell on these subjects, as we have much more pressing issues at the moment... :

I would be fooling everyone to say I haven't been brainstorming this little photo shoot. It'll go down in the books! Besides, how could this little LL not create a magical holiday memory?!?

She's sfp.

Riding my bike to work tomorrow and nobody can stop me. I'm looking at you, rain.

Over and out,
hmc

Don't Live Above Your Raisin'

ATTENTION EVERYONE: tonight marks the first night of Fall 2012 that my HWBB (hot water bottle baby) made an appearance and I am both extremely excited and a little saddened about this. I'm mostly excited because it is oh-so toasty and I'd forgotten how lovely it is to carry this thing around under my shirt while I'm cooking dinner, surfing Pinterest, or climbing into bed. I know Car-Sex is probably really missing this event, so I figured I'd give her a little shout-out to feel like she's a part of this.

ALSO--perhaps the strangest coincidence of ole HWBB showing its rubbery face is that I got a call tonight from the one and only amazing and wonderful Alex, the woman responsible for me owning a HWBB in the first place!! Obviously, the HWBB gods are shining down on  us. I love that girl so SO much, and I already feel revived after playing some serious catch-up. I cannot WAIT to make the trek up to Beantown to visit her (and my wonderful wife, obvi). I will pack my parka and make a serious trip of it.

Meanwhile, here in VA I had a productively lazy weekend, filled with sheepdog trials; fall fiber festivities; drunken, 3AM cookout stops; bike rides downtown; and family reunions in the holler. Sometimes I think I could write a book about the eclectic mix of people I have in my life....melting pot may not begin to describe it.

Like any lazy weekend when I have nothing to do but I'm itching to be outside, I head to my local cemetery and lounge around, creepily, looking at all the different headstones and wondering about the people underneath them. My mom and I drove out to Crozet to check on the dead relatives...they're still there, so that's good.

**Fun Fact: The ones on the end aren't actually buried in this spot. One of my crazy relatives from back in the day decided it would be swell to have these headstones resting on this mountain rather than the one where the bodies are actually planted. The only logical move? Uproot the stones and move 'em up to better real estate. Location, location...?

On Saturday, I headed into Orange with Molly and Lindsay to visit the Fall Fiber Festival!! Isn't that exciting? Who wouldn't want bushels and bushels of wool and kettle corn thrust upon them?  The best part about all this was the sheepdog trials that were running all day. If I can birth one child that's half as smart as these border collies, I will be immensely satisfied. They are amazing!! They made me run home and Google "border collies for sale charlottesville virginia" and my dreams came to a crashing halt when I realized these pups sell for a cool $5,000-$6,000. Each. Yes, that's 3 zeros. Yikes. Anyway, after we'd had our fill of fall fun, we headed to Barboursville Vineyards for $5 wine tasting! Yum! This place is great because they give you like, 1million tastings and it's beautiful.

Happy cows drink Virginia wine.

Afterwards, I went to Whole Foods and bought approximately 8 blocks of "fancy" cheese and crackers to eat for dinner. Have you ever had cheese drizzled with honey on a cracker? Sweet lord, get on that. It will turn you into a raging maniac over your cutting board. Or maybe that's just me.

As beautiful as Saturday was, today was mofo disgusting. Rain. Cold. Wind(ish). Perfect day for a "family reunion," right? Umm...only in the holler.

So my family works like this: one side of my mom's family is about as old a Virginia clan as you can get. They have "Charlottesville" accents, can trace their lineage back to fancy-pants kings, think the sun shines out of their Albemarle asses, have family portraits/paintings from the 1700somethings hanging in their houses, and name everyone the same three names for generations (I'm looking at you, Page**, Hugh, and Anne....).

The other side of my mom's family has lived on the same plot for as long as human beings have eaten squirrels. In fact, they still eat squirrels! And opossum stew! And livers! And chitlins, probably! Their family tree doesn't exactly branch, and most need subtitles a-la Swamp People to decipher what they're actually saying. Luckily, I speak fluent 'country-folk,' and can hold a conversation..but it can be tricky.

Anyway, my great aunt Ethel's house is the hub of any/all family festivities, so around 2:00pm today the family came creeping out of the woodworks (literally) to feast on deviled eggs, potato salad, hot dogs, pistachio pie, spinach dip, chicken fingers, baked beans, and any other picnic-genre food you can imagine. It is delicious.

While catching up with these cousins/uncles/aunts/people who are related but I'm not sure how, this is what I learn:
  1. If you ever need to trap a raccoon, use sardines as bait.
  2. If you ever need to trap a groundhog, use a cantaloupe.
  3. You can buy a fleece camo hoodie jacket for $12 and it will last you four years, at least!
  4. The best/new type of pepper to plant are Revolution peppers.
  5. The apple moonshine is more potent than the peach, but neither will make you as tight as the blackberry.
Overall, it was a good day, filled with simple mountain folk with a knack for driving jacked-up Jeeps and knowing how to unclog kitchen sinks with a tin can. There are just some things they don't teach ya in school.

I am left with many leftovers and I am thrilled. Off to bed to start a new week...hopefully one that includes tons and tons of bike riding, because I am obsessed and it's basically all I want to do. I guess there could be worse addictions, so I'll take it.

Hannah

Ring-a-Ding Fall

Don't get me wrong--I'm a summer girl through and through. There's nothing I love more than having the sun shine for hours, seeing lightening bugs in the sky, smelling fresh-cut grass, wearing jorts 24x7, and hearing whippoorwills in the distance. It is good for the soul. It makes everything right. Everyone is just a little happier.

But....

I do love fall. Especially in the Blue Ridge Mountains. We're not quite there yet, but you can catch a glimpse every morning when the fog is just a little denser and the air is just a little crisper. You start sleeping better and shaving less. We've only had a few true fall days in September, but I've made enough PSLs to feel it in my bones.

Besides, there are some true signs that it's here...

...there's usually a beer festival every weekend!! This one last weekend just happened to feature pretzel necklaces and was in my backyard. Excellent.

Also, it's completely acceptable to start crafting pumpkin loaves in every shape and form (preferably in Dala Horse form, but no one's judging).

Certain fur-balls are getting furrier and more squirrly with the cold weather.

One of the most exciting advancements: fall wardrobe!! Glitter loafers! Jackets! Scarves! Puffy vests! Stocking caps!

Also...living in Blacksburg for four years taught me many wonderful life lessons. One of the most important/weirdest is that once it gets cool, you cut your mofo hair. Why, you may ask? Wouldn't it make more sense to keep it long and warm and snuggly down the back of your shirt? You would think yes. HOWEVER--short hair is queen because when you're trekking across the Drillfield and the wind is blowing and you're cursing all that is good in the world, you will at least be thankful that your hair is NOT being whipped into a tangled frenzy. Short hair for the win. So I don't live in Blacksburg anymore. A girl can still dream.

!!!BREAKING NEWS!!! The Mason Shaker has made its way home to Central Virginia--perfect timing, I'd say. Not only is it time to switch to red wine, we've also got the Montpelier Hunt Races right around the corner. If you know my family, you know we are hard-core liquor drinkers**. This will definitely come in handy.

**Umm, no.

Another fall pleasure? New, weird stuff at the thrift stores. It's out with the old, in with... someone else's old! Not sure if I need these in my house, but it would be a nice Halloween touch.

And finally, one lovely thing about fall is that you're still sometimes allowed a look back into summer when you're given unexpected warm nights where you can frolic outside in a t-shirt and jeans, eating crepes and listening to impromptu jazz bands on the mall.

So bring it on, mother nature!! I'm ready to see my breath and pluck apples from trees and snip spinach from my garden and take hikes in fleece jackets. Bring it.

xoxo,
Hannah
