It Was So Hot Outside, We Could Fry An Egg...

I had a great -- albeit super fast -- weekend. I spent all of Saturday soaking up the public library and flipping through magazines, checking out memoirs, and researching travel options for upcoming trips. I read a memoir (Crazy Love) by Leslie Morgan Steiner about her abusive relationship with her first husband. While it wasn't the best book I've ever read, it was one of those I couldn't put down, not even to refill my coffee or eat yet another lemon-pepper cucumber. It was sad and descriptive and at most times bleak... but those are usually my favorite kind of books, anyway.

Also, I bought this super dorky egg cooker at Williams-Sonoma that cooks your fried eggs in the shape of daisies. Awesome, I know. Let's just say I've been getting more than my fair share of protein the last couple days. Sooo cute sooo easy.

Next up:
Most egg-cellent. Bahaa.
Yesterday, Eileen and Rob came up so Rob could do something important downtown for law skool/life. Eileen and I bummed around the miserably hot city, grabbed some espresso, checked out Eastern Market, and had lunch/dinner (linner) at a super cute and random cafe near the Capitol. I'm getting so stoked about our trip to Charleston that's RIGHT AROUND THE CORNER! I may or may not have a countdown running at work on my whiteboard for erryone to see. I'm betting hard money that J's new pad is the sickest one in town, and I'm the first to admit that I need a little Owsley lovin' in my life.

Other than the fact that I am once again battling the dreaded poison ivy, life is b-e-a-t-i-f-u-l and busy. I'm trying not to rush through August so I can enjoy every moment, even if most moments are spent  in sweltering 90+ degree heat. With Charleston, Blacksburg, and Maine on the calendar, my goal to book a new trip every weekend is shaping up nicely. Now if only the Landlady + pooch would return, life would be perfection...

Pleased As Punch

Just a hop, skip, and a jump away from the weekend! Looking forward to blackbean burgers in the backyard, mandioca, canoeing on the river, homemade candles, summer reading lists, Trader Joes wine, and a happy happy father's day. Breaking wishbones for beautiful weather!

Shutdown 2011!!!

With the government on the brink of shutdown, I feel like I'm an extra in the ever-thrilling, fabulously acted Twister. Cows are flying--people are screaming--Helen Hunt is looking fierce in a mud-strewn wife beater. All hell is breaking loose, and I'm trying to figure out how to spend my potential spur-of-the-moment vaca next week.

Shit.

I could spend my days shredding with Jillian. Repainting my dresser. Making homemade laundry detergent. Baking rosemary/olive oil/jalapeno/cheese bread until I burst. Embroidering Christmas presents. Getting late-term abortions to piss off the masses (jk! duh). Applying to new, non-government-related jobs. Participating in Wine Friday?! In general, LIVING MY LIFE. No point in getting bummed about this mess now. I'll be gettin' my blog on and readin' my books...nobody puts this baby in a corner, government!

In honor of me wanting to punch Congress, etc. in the face, I am offering you some 'punches' of color for today's post.
Get saturated.

This hue makes me want to leap to the heavens with happiness.
It's the perfect grapefruity vibe that I need, and I love the mirror with the green reflections.
 Juicy fruit my life away.

These gorgeous blue doors opening to that fabulous staircase...are perfection. They make the front stoop feel like an entirely separate outdoor space. Sparkles x 1million.

Bam!--bam!--colors!--everywhere!

This butternutty goodness reminds me of my mom's "new" bathroom. Bonus Mom points from me.

Just look at this. Soak it up. Almost as good as Heath Ledger's baby's mama's dress circa Oscars 2006.
Sigh.

Go forth and load up on national parks + cherry blossoms while you can. Who knows where they'll be tomorrow.

Bathroom Humor

So I'm a little ways through Russell Baker's memoir, Growing Up, and I stumbled across a description of his experience with a rare and delightful wonder--taking a dump inside.

Check.it.out.

"At the top of the stairs lay the miracle of plumbing. Shutting the door to be absolutely alone with it, I ran my fingers along the smooth enamel of the bathtub and glistening facet handles of the sink. The white majesty of the toilet bowl, through which gallons of water could be sent rushing by the slightest touch of a silvery level, filled me with envy. A roll of delicate paper was placed beside it. Here was luxury almost too rich to be borne by anyone whose idea of fancy toiletry was Uncle Irvey's two-hole privy and a Montgomery War catalog.

After gazing upon it as long as I dared without risking interruption by a search party, I pushed the lever and savored the supreme moment when thundering waters emptied into the bowl and vanished with a mighty gurgle."

So, in honor(?) of this passage, I thought I'd post some delicious examples of indoor plumbing that I certainly wouldn't mind having in my house. If I had a house. Anyway.

Toot-a-loo!

A Room of Alex's Own

Ok, so my dear and lovely friend Alex just moved into a new place in Northampton, MA, and bought this adorbs chair as one of her first pieces of furniture:
.

Totally presh, right? Then she said, "I am decorating my room with aquamarine/seafoamy blues and greens and light pinks I think--this makes me a bit uncomfortable, but we'll see how it goes" and lord honey child I am loving that color scheme. So. I did a little early-morning google action/blog surfing to see what I could uncover, and this is what I've got to start with (I kinda forgot about the pink, whoopsie, but don't you worry, the hunt has only just begun):
.
Ob.sessed with this chair. And the wallpaper. And the PINK orchid, which you know, are actually very hard to kill. Who woulda thought??
-
So bright! So light! So turqouisey black and white!
-

Yeah, so this is for a wedding and some of the stuff is kinda cheesy...it's the colors gfriend...use dat imagination.
-

I had this picture saved for something else, but I looked at it and fell in love again with the headboard. I really don't think it would be hard to craft something like this with the right amount of foam and a staple gun. Then when people come over to visit and fawn over your awesomeness you can be like, 'Yeah, no biggie, I crafted it myself,' and they can be like, 'Damn that girl's got class.' Get it? Good.
-

The angels are singing for those two simple pillows. I guess this is for if you want less teal/seafoamy more black/white/cream/brown/tan.
-

Game over, this room is perfection.
-

Actually, this is where I envision you living. Lots of fabulous drapery action, some serious upholstered chairs, a pheasant?feather chandelier...I guess I'd allow you to read Pride and Prejudice in this piece...
-

Ok, here is some more teal and a wee little turtle footstool that I think is super cute.
-
It even looks good on a sneaker!..?
-
Whoops, I found a second image of the perfect room and just had to post it. I know that murals are kind of big right now or whatever and most of the time they look like shit, but this one--this one, I'm feeling. You could totally do this, too...
-
Muted blurry goodness. I think an adult lives here.
-

Hearts and stars, and how easy it would be to slap some white picture frames on the walls like this and fill them with gorgeous black and white photos of all your lovers/travels.
-
More collage action. This is if you're feelin' real fancy pantsy a la a Tiffany's box or Del's Gmommy's front door. True ballers unite!
-
Recently I hit up TJMaxx and they were having a mega sale on tons of teal/turquoise/seafoamy lamps and accessories. I mean, I know it's NOVA, but they've got to have the same shit in the Mass, right??
-

In conclusion, I just realized that Northampton is sometimes referred to as Noho??!?! Fabulous. I will forever be calling it by this name. Also, I'm counting down the days till I can come visit the great New England and see my lovely shiny beautiful friend Alex and we can treat ourselves to some PBRs, wine fridays, and jalapeno poppers. Loves.It!.
.
(Ps. this is what you get when you Google 'C
lassy PBR.' I'll take it.)
