Scenes from the Week

I'm with the band....

Hopped on the tour bus with the Drive by Truckers and my old friend Cole. He does as amazing job as their light manager and sneaked us into a fantastic show at the Jefferson. Thanks Cole!

Oh hai junior-year prom date (and Meghan)!

Enjoyed the beautiful mall for the first Fridays After Five--Love Cannon was playing and the place was packed!

Spent the rainy days painting painting painting, and watching Abita enjoy her new favorite hiding spot.

Documented backyard haircuts (Maudie was v. excited)

Fam-dam-ily in action.

Bought new plants at the farmer's market--I'm looking at you, purple tomatoes! Nom.

Just got back from dinner at Bellas with Meghan--topped it off with a Dreamsicle martini at Bang. Will most likely go kicking and screaming into work tomorrow. What's a girl gotta do to be a stay-at-home-someone?! Sheesh...

Decide What to Be and Go Be It

It's Thursday, it's Thursday! Best day of the week. However....I am torn between a few weekend options, and I can't figure out which route to take.

Let's see the breakdown.

Situation 1:
I have to be in Charlottesville tomorrow during the day until 3:00. There's no escaping it, and I think I'm driving into town tomorrow morning and will arrive around 11:00am. From there I have the option of staying in town to see The Avett Brothers at the Pavilion, hanging out with my moms all weekend, farting around Charlottesville with some lovers, and in general lounging in the Central VA for all it's worth.

Situation 2:
I have to be in Charlottesville tomorrow during the day until 3:00. HOWEVER. I have also been offered tickets to see the Nationals (that's a baseball team, apparently) play downtown in some sort of corporate whore sky box that's filled to the brim with free free FREE alcohol, food, buffalo wings, chips, alcohol, free, beer, cheeze dip, hot dogs, free, alcohol, beer and the few cool people who actually work at my office.

I can haz Kevin Costner??
It's air conditioned. It's stocked. And apparently some vendor is trying to seduce my company to buy ad space, so they're shoving free Nats paraphernalia (just what I want!!) + liquor down our throats with the hopes of winning our dolla bills. You know how appealing free food + drinks + shit is to me...

Conflict:
Do I really want to spend a total of 6 hours in my car tomorrow driving to Charlottesville in the morning and then racing back at night for the game? I mean, baseball is notoriously the most boring sport ever played, and I am always happy to frolic around CVille...

Serious struggles.

Anyway. Today I'm finally using my gift certificate that I got for Christmas last year to the hoity-toity Elizabeth Arden Red Door Spa. Gettin' my nails did again. I'm fancy huh fo real now.

In the meantime, apparently Louisa/Mineral is in the running to have Alan Jackson (Yes, THE ALAN JACKSON OMG OMG OMG) play a free concert in town. AJ in the Jungle?? What whaaat?! Cast your vote! Give the people the glorious blond locks and skin-tight Wranglers they deserve! We've gone country, betch.

Sooo pretty--like a Cocker Spaniel personified.
Fill out that ballot and have a fabulous Thursday!

The Brilliant Girl With the Famous Thighs

On Tonight's Menu: A little Third Eye Blind lovin, some afternoon thunderstorms, and many frolics at the fair with friends and faves.

Oh, June, you had me at hello...
*Also, crossing my fingers for a funnel cake. I'm on the hunt...

What Will Come of All Our Pride?

There are few women who conjure up the feeling of pure, unadulterated, obsessive lust in me like the one-and-only Grace Potter. Jetting out at 3:00 to see all of Grace in her hair-whipping, leg-stomping, throat-moaning glory and I simply cannot wait! My summer concert list is lining up perfectly.

What better way to kick it off?

She gives the people what they want...

...while letting her crazies fly free.

Jefferson Theater won't know what hit it. YES!

The Arc of a Love Affair

There isn't really a way to express how amazing last night was for me. I left work early. Got an awesome haircut. Made it through Tysons with minimal traffic. Caught the first train into the city and met up with my lovers. Lounged on the mall and soaked up the sun. Wandered our way  to the DAR Constitution Hall. Found our fantastic seats. Let the magic begin.

So I was expecting this concert to be amazing. I was expecting to be completely happy and blown away. I was expecting it to be somewhat life-changing. I wasn't expecting to tear up at the sound of the first song (Crazy Love II) and remain in a state of complete euphoria for the next two hours. It was the best performance I've ever seen. I love that little man.

Now, I've always had a soft spot for Paul Simon in my soul, but all drama aside, this was the closest thing I've ever had to a religious experience. Every song he performed took me back to a different memory, a different place in my life in such an unexpectedly vivid way....

....like listening to 50 Ways to Leave Your Lover while driving around UVA grounds with The Boy.

...debating the saddest section of Slip Slidin Away and realizing how one song can mean three completely different things for three different people.

...feeling the bumps that ran up and down Wendy's car seats on the way to Grymes with Gumboots in the tape deck.

...lying on the floor in the Tiny House with Del, singing Diamonds on the Soles of Her Shoes.

...remembering how I've stood on the corner of Lafayette (in the state of Louisiana) and relished in NOLA lovin' with that song ringing in my ears for a good solid year.

...seeing Alex's face when Obvious Child came blasting through the speakers and the way she clutched her little hands together for the whole song.

...pondering the fact that I play Mother and Child Reunion every time I drive home to Louisa.

...and a million more. Every song. Every one. I want to be reincarnated as a Paul Simon lyric-- no more, no less.

If you ever have the chance to see him in concert, do it. Cough up the dough and soak it in because it was one of the best experiences of my life.

There Must Be 50 Ways...

...to describe my love for Paul Simon.
...and to celebrate that I GOT TICKETS to see him in DC!
Let's just say we've been lovahs since I was a wee tiny babe...we've seen the good, bad, and ugly together, and May 25 can't get here fast enough!

See? Even Paulie's a Hokie at heart...
-----------------
Meanwhile, this is how I'll look whilst counting down the days (13!) till my Caribbean getaway.

Daydreaming of dreamy neutral nooks with wallpaper and blinds and poufs...

Growing out my locks to ring in the summer/new adventures coming my way.

Embracing my artsy side and getting my craft on...

Buying bushels of fresh flowers to fill my everyday delight.

...and contemplating future ocean smooch sessions, mmm...

Did I mention Paul Simon? Slip slide me away because I know what I know--Me and Julio will be celebrating with diamonds on the soles of our shoes with every obvious child out there until our glorious mother-child reunion sends us down the cool, cool river!!!!
STOKED.

Do you like Billie Holiday? I love him!

I'd forgotten how much I love Billie Holiday until she came creakin' on my Padora station today. So, so good.

You Go To My Head
You go to my head
You go to my head,
And you linger like a haunting refrain
And I find you spinning round in my brain
Like the bubbles in a glass of champagne.
You go to my head

Like a sip of sparkling burgundy brew
And I find the very mention of you
Like the kicker in a julep or two.
The thrill of the thought

That you might give a thought
To my plea casts a spell over me
Still I say to myself: get a hold of yourself
Can't you see that it can never be?
You go to my head

With a smile that makes my temperature rise
Like a summer with a thousand Julys
You intoxicate my soul with your eyes
Though I'm certain that this heart of mine
Hasn't a ghost of a chance in this crazy romance,
You go to my head.

Girl Crush 101

So you're probably thinking, 'Is this like a Noxzema commercial or what?!!?' But seriously, I actually have a way normal life for a teenage girl.

But let's talk about something serious: girl crushes. Everyone has them. Everyone wants to be one. So today I'm focusing on the (famous) loves-of-my-life...starting with:

5. Grace Potter
Sigh, it was love at first listen and then mega girl crush at first sight. Who can argue with her ridiculously hot, orgasmic, hair-whipping frenzied moaning Apologies-ridden Aura? NO ONE. Because she is a babe. End of story.
-

-
You try making an organ sexy. I dare you.
-
-
The fringy bang never looked so good.
-
-
Bow down to 'ole GPotter .
--
Oh my gah, those boots, those gams, those glasses, that belt--too much to handle. Squeeze you like a key lime is right.

-
4. Kate Hudson
Clearly from a different planet. Yeah, ok, so she's blonde and tiny and has a freak-of-nature six pack. Big whip...
-
-
Her hair looks like a billowy pillow of softness that you could just wrap yourself in and die of happiness. Sigh.
-
-
Holla, Almost Famous throwback. I salute your natty spunch-sprayed look.
-

3. Beyonce
I mean, seriously, does this woman even need an introduction? Duh, no, she doesn't. Girl is hot. And fabulous. And I'm not entirely convinced that her skin isn't made of velvet. Yum, she is delicious.
-
-
Check up on it? Yes, please?
-
-
2. Gwyneth Paltrow
I bet you five whole dollars that my girl Gwynny P is a mega hardcore bitch in real life. And that only makes me love her more. That, and the fact that she's married to that weird-o lead singer from Coldplay. And that her firstborn is named after one of my favorite fruits. And that she starred as the best character ever in The Royal Tenenbaums. So bitch on, Gwyn. Bitch on.
-
-
Yeah, so she needs to eat a burger or four. I don't care. True love doesn't judge emaciation.
-
-
Fuck me sideways I'm obsessed with her.
-
-
And finally, let me introduce you to the one and only...
1. GWEN STEFANI LOVE OF MY LIFE!!!!!
It all started back in the fourth grade. There I was--nasty, (literally) dirty blonde girl, baggy T-shirt, homemade knee-length jorts and a mouthful of heinous crooked teeth. One day the sun decided to shine its light on my disgustingness by giving me a little listen to No Doubt's Tragic Kingdom.
The rest was mofo history. I loved. I pined. I wanted to be Gwen Stefani. (Well, kind of, not really, but still, my very first girl crush emerged!!) And I chose wisely, if I do say so myself.
Take a look:
-
Red lipssss I know you're the one.
- -
This pink/platinum look makes me weak in the knees.
-
PHOTO MONTAGE FROM
THE BEST MUSIC VIDEO EVER CREATED!!!!!
ever.
-
-
Ten+ years later, my heart will go on and on...
-

So I realize that the majority of these hoes look pretty much the same (i.e., tall, hot, blonde, white, bitchy). Don't hate. A girl can't control who she falls in crush with, and please--don't you think I know that broads like Salma Hayek, Iman, Penelope Cruz, Halle Berry, blahblahblah are in a totally different category of hot? UmmDuh.
-
Class dismissed.

My Latest Obsession

Isn't she lovely.....(insert Stevie Wonder seranade)
--
Ok, so because my last Anthro obsession failed to go on sale, I'm moving on to better, more blue-and-green things. Ugh, this dress would look fucking fab on me, if I do say so myself. And I do.
--
Blahh so I'm reading this new book called, "Undress Me in the Temple of Heaven" by Susan Jane Gilman and it's about these two friends who graduate from Brown and hightail it across the world for a year spent traveling. Ugh. I could go for that--like, now. I loveee this author's voice...she is so witty and funny and it makes me want to reread her other book, "Hypocrite in a Pouffy White Dress" (pretty good despite the tards title).
--
I'm sure my beautiful bestie Roberta and I could find plenty of things to entertain us on our travels (I'm having flashbacks to Ben's Towing circa 2005 via highway to South Carolina...get in the cubby Anne Frank!).
--
Ugh, I also just found out I have to drive alllll the way to Alexandria (ok, so not that far, but whatevs) on Monday AND Tuesday for some BS editing seminar. The company is paying $745 for me to go. And I don't even get a free lunch. And parking is $9/day. W.T.F. Irritation abounds.
--
Whatever, I'm over it. Look at these cool pictures and be glad you're my friend.
--
This is in France. I wish it were in Reston.
--

--
Some pretty sweet fabric for a pretty sweet chair.
--

--
Just like this graphic. You should too.
--

--
This room reminds me of a Corinne Bailey Rae song. Maybe because of the dusky, summertimeish hue. Maybe.
--

--
life just can't be a picnic every day because then it's no longer a picnic--it's lunch.
--

Happy Thursday, best day of the week.

Doin' the Wrong Thing...

...by Kaki King. Listen to it. So so good...

Teensy bit obsessed with this pic.
That's all.
Love,
Me.
